Concept for Final

Embrace your shadow and duplicity or go insane from stress.

This project is similar to my first project conceptually. I am trying to show the importance of acknowledging the shadow within or inner concscience. I see the shadow as the more instinctual and natural side of the psyche, and the outer concsience as the side most affected by modern society. In my narrative I plan to show the dual sides of a character and the consequences of suppressing his or her shadow.

The first scene will show the outer conscience worried about his or her appearance, and there will be several clocks on the wall symbolizing the impact of society. The second scene is the shadow surfacing and taking power. The third, is the shadow indulging in the guilty pleasures of life. Fourth, is the outer conscience killing the shadow as a symbol of repressing the inner conscience. The final scene will be the outer concsience zombified by the stresses of society.

I plan to photograph these locations again without the character in them and do handrawn animations on top of them in toon boom. I will do stop motion animation for the clocks. I will take the footage into AE for effects and camera movement.

write up

The 3d Animation went well but although I am satisfied with my end result, I would like to experiment more with the 3d tools to get a better grasp on them.  I would like to use them to create 3d spaces in the future.

Write Up

The experiment went pretty well, it opened up many new ideas and techniques to use on After Efftects.  I am excited to incorporate some of these effects in my own work.

write up

My animation went well, I had some timing issues at first but I worked them out.  I am wondering if my background may be too dark but I want to get some feedback before I change it.

idea and storyboard

I plan on having two figures on a seesaw going up and down as a symbol of the power struggle between inner and outer consciences. There will be video of ink spills inside the figures, flowing in and out as they go up and down. The figure with the ink will be on the lower side of the seesaw as a representation of power over the other. In the background there will also be a lighter ink spill shaking and obulating by using the puppet tool. The movement of the background will remain hectic to further represent struggle. I want this to be played on a loop to show the never ending cycle.

Write Up

*Deadline for Mobility is April 30*

My animation went well, I am pleased with the overall look. I took out the last scene because I felt it was more powerful ending with a bang. I am getting used to After Effects again, and I am also still learning new things about it.

My animation is going well so far although it isn't finished.  I did not get to finish last night because my dad's truck is broke down and he works the night shift so i had to leave early so he could make it to work.  I have 3 scenes done so far, and 2 more to go.  I had a little trouble with moving the masks, I'm sure there is an easier way than how I was doing it.

New York Studio Program

*An opportunity for one student from MCA to go to to New York City for a semester to produce artwork, visit galleries and museums, and have top artist critique work.

*Located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York staffed by two professional artists/instructors. Artist visit weekly. Will have individual workspace in the studio. Four faculty include two artists – a painter and a sculptor – and two art writer/critics.

Faculty evaluation of student progress

*Will receive 15 credit hours, 12 studio 3 liberal studies) for a semester as registered at MCA.
*Tuition is paid to MCA which will include a housing stipend to assist with rent.

*Chief Factors in Selection
GPA
Quality of work submitted
Written Proposal
Letters of Recommendation
Demonstrated dedication to ART

*Must write a proposal stating how this experience will benefit my training and growth and specifying immediate aspirations as well as long term goals and dreams.
*Must submit 10 slides/images of representative recent work.
*Two MCA instructors must submit letters of recommendations in which they attest my total commitment to ART, my maturity and readiness to undertake independent living and studying in a challenging environment.
*Must complete the Application
*Must provide Official transcripts

There is a housing facility affiliated with the program that costs $750 a month.
I think this would be a good opportunity for me to get outside of my comfort zone by getting away from Memphis. It would also be interesting to see how my work would change, moving from the rural to the busy urban life. I am going to try my best to do this because it will be a good experience and will look good on my records. If I do get to go, I will be the first Video major to go from MCA.

Outline

*I chose to use abstract paintings for my backgrounds.  I wanted to use these to create abstract landscapes that change from a more mechanical look to a more organic look depending on whether the person or their shadow is in control.  I plan on drawing in the person and the shadow digitally, to create a contrast between the being and his or her surroundings.

*I want to communicate the importance of embracing the shadow through the piece.  I want to show that if one keeps their darker more instinctive side suppressed for too long, it will keep building momentum until it eventually surfaces on  its own.  Their are consequences the person will have to pay after the shadow goes out to play.

1.  The person is comfortable in an ordered mechanical world, while the shadow likes a more chaotic world.  The person is trying to keep the shadow at bay, while the shadow struggles to gain control.

2.  Eventually, the shadow  is suppressed too long and surfaces on its own.  Things begin to get chaotic and fall apart.  At the end, the person must deal with the mess left by the shadow.

3.  Person- likes things to be under control, constantly keeps the shadow internalized.

Shadow- is more instinctive, likes chaos, and indulgences.  Grows stronger the longer it is internalized.

I plan to focus my work around the duality of human nature and C. G. Jung's concept of "The Shadow." Everyone has a good side and a darker side to their personality, while some are well balanced, others may sway too far from one side or the other. The "Shadow" is a part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. Ever said something mean to someone, and then said you didn't mean it that way? Usually, this is your "Shadow" surfacing, and you probably did really mean what you said, exactly how you said it. Although it sounds really bad, the "Shadow" is not always negative. One could have positive things repressed, just as well as the negative. If the shadow is not occasionally embraced, or "let out to play," it will only grow darker and eventually will surface on its own.
I have chosen this topic because I find the concept of duality very interesting, and because I notice the presence of the "Shadow" more and more in everyday life, dreams, and all types of art. I believe it will be easy to make an abundance of strong work, by using these ideas for fuel. By exploring this concept, I hope to be able to recognize the duality in myself and embrace my own shadow, therefore making me grow as a person and artist.

Brainstorming

I am mainly interested in manipulating video and photographs in After Effects.  I am also very interested in how music and sounds effect animations and video.  I would like to experiment with these elements in a way similar to Chris Cunningham of Aphex Twin.  Overall I am open to experiment in many ways with After Effects.

I am interested in the human mind, Carl Jung's concept of "The Shadow," the "beast within,"  and the cruelty and duality of human nature.  I know these are very broad subjects but I am having a little trouble narrowing it down at the moment.
